KuulAire Portable Evaporative Cooling Units™ Keep You Cool

Portable Evaporative Cooling Units from KuulAire are a cooling solution unlike any other. Similar to a gentle breeze blowing across a lake, these units offer you and your environment ‘cooling’ as nature intended – through the simple evaporation of water, without chemicals and without a high price tag to purchase or operate. For use both indoors and out, KuulAire has designed a portable unit to cool every ‘hot spot’ you have.
An Alternative “Green” Cooling System

Evaporative coolers are not air conditioners. Using ordinary tap-water and standard 110V electricity to significantly cool the ambient air, there are no chemicals, no high amperage compressors, and no ducting necessary, making KuulAire Portable Evaporative Coolers an inexpensive and highly ‘green’ way to cool your environment.

Evaporative coolers are not fans. Box fans simply circulate the same warm, stagnant air, over and over. Evaporative coolers produce cool air, naturally, by combining the natural process of evaporation with a simple air-moving system to lower temperatures. Warm air is pulled through moist pads where it is cooled by evaporation and circulated throughout the air.  As this occurs, temperatures can be lowered by up to 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

A Natural Process

Nature is filled with ingenious designs and cooling is one of the most practical, effective processes that occurs, accomplished through the simplicity of water evaporation. Like the air after a sudden rain storm on a hot, sweltering day, nature gives us numerous examples … Trees transpire large amounts of water through the stomata (pores) in their leaves, and cumulatively (as forests) affect climate at the local and global levels.  Perspiration on the skin quickly evaporates, immediately cooling the person off. Evaporative cooling capitalizes on this principle, producing heat absorption by moisture evaporation, cooling and then circulating significantly cooler, refreshing air. All evaporative cooler designs benefit from the fact that water has the highest known enthalpy (latent heat) of vaporization of any substance. Utilizing water as a cooling source to create cooler air is a natural way to cool any environment.

An Industry Standard

Evaporative coolers (also called swamp or desert coolers) have been effectively used in commercial applications since the beginning of the 20th century. Over the decades, there have been many improvements and today there are various commercial/industrial evaporative coolers as well as a plethora of smaller residential units available to choose from; portable free-standing personal sized coolers to large scale, fully ducted systems used commercially.  KuulAire has been an industry leader for almost 20 years in the design and manufacture of portable evaporative cooling units used in professional athletic facilities, manufacturing facilities, warehouses, military facilities, and homes around the world. In the past five years, KuulAire portable products were introduced to the residential market, both indoor and outdoor, with the goal of distributing cooler air instead of circulating hot air and providing spot cooling where air conditioning is impractical.

Climate Concerns

Historically, evaporative cooling performs extremely well in climates where the air is hot and the humidity is dry. Widely used in arid, desert regions such as the southwestern USA, northern Mexico and even the southern part of Australia, it can also be advantageous in areas of moderate humidity as there are many cost effective uses for this type of cooling. Portable commercial units have been successfully used throughout the US, including high-humidity areas such as Texas and Florida, in sports stadiums, automotive/aviation garages, and manufacturing and warehouse facilities.

How Evaporative Cooling Works

Direct evaporation occurs in an enclosed metal or plastic box with vented sides containing a centrifugal fan or ‘blower’, electric motor with pulleys (sheaves), or a direct-driven axial fan, and a water pump to wet the evaporative cooling pads. To cool, the fan draws ambient air through vents on the side of the unit and through the damp pads. Heat in the air evaporates water from the pads which are constantly re-dampened to continue the cooling process.  Cooled, moist air is then delivered via venting in the front of your KuulAire unit.

Comparing Apples and Oranges

For the purpose of comparison, if refrigerated cooling systems are the apples of the industry, then evaporative cooling solutions can be considered the oranges; although similar in that they both ‘cool’, they work on different principles. So how does an inexpensive, ‘green’ cooling solution compare to that age-old standard … air conditioning?

Refrigerated cooling systems use chemicals and compressors. They are expensive to install and operate and require ductwork. Portable evaporative cooling units use water and the natural effects of evaporation to provide cool air; extremely ‘green’, good for planet and good for you! Portable evaporative cooling units are ideally suited for ‘area’ or ‘spot’ cooling. Although they work in most areas (see Climate Concerns and Made in the USA sections) they will be most effective in hot, arid climates. Unlike air conditioners which require a closed environment, evaporative coolers utilize fresh air to function optimally. And the cost savings with evaporative cooling systems over refrigerated air units is considerable; from purchase and installation to operation costs (energy savings) and maintenance --- the savings are substantial.

When it comes to making a decision on whether to invest in an evaporative cooling unit and subsequently, what size* to purchase, there are several factors to consider: cost, ‘green’ versus chemicals, installation requirements, and climate, although climate could be the deciding factor for some people. If your environment is hot and dry or moderately dry, an evaporative cooler may be a perfect fit. If you live an area with high humidity, however, a portable air conditioner may a better choice.

The cooling efficiency of apples (air conditioners) are measured in BTUs; the higher the BTU value, the stronger the air conditioner (power and cooling capacity). The cooling efficiency of our KuulAire oranges (evaporative coolers) is based on cubic feet per minute (CFM) of airflow, which translates as the cubic feet per minute of air that an evaporative cooler can blow.

The following formula can help you determine the CFM rating needed for the area you wish to cover.

Room Square Footage x Ceiling Height = Cubic Feet.   Cubic Feet divided by 2 = CFM Rating.

Made in the USA

KuulAire is based out of Center, Texas, a small rural community of about 6,000 located in East Texas, USA. The industry leader in the design and manufacture of portable evaporative cooling units and evaporative cooling media since 1992, this manufacturing facility boasts a large, in-house rotational molding department and the only USA manufactured evaporative cooling pad production.

Prior to 1992, evaporative coolers were primarily sold in the dry/arid regions of the US as fixed indoor systems. KuulAire pioneered the use of evaporative coolers for portable outdoor use and then in 2008, developed products to be used in residential environments, both indoor and outdoor.

Cooling Pads

The cooling pads designed by KuulAire are made here in the USA from the heaviest, highest-quality virgin kraft paper manufactured for maximum longevity and sustainability. It is the strongest pad available, offering the highest resin content in the industry (advanced resin technology), and outperforming the competition in tests.

LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION!

Just as in real estate, location plays a critical role in determining whether a KuulAire Portable Air Cooler is right for you.  We want you to be 100% satisfied with your purchase.

Air Coolers perform optimally in dry, hot climates including the arid desert and southwestern states:  Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Southern California, Southwestern Colorado, Western Texas and Utah.

When it comes to states like Florida, Illinois and New York, however, where humidity climbs above 38% in the summer months, an air cooler is not an ideal choice. Air Coolers rely on water to provide cooling and will actually add humidity to the air.
